    Indian Stringbush (Depu Pelanduk / Liao Ge Wang). Tough string-like bast bark and coral-red drupes. Fierce Sovereign for Severe Tonsillitis & Scrofula: melts purulent tonsillar diphtheria, dissolves scrofulous lymph nodes, drains dropsy. MANDATORY 2-HOUR BOILING.

    Cautions & Contraindications

    • HIGH DAPHNANE TOXICITY WARNING: Raw ingestion causes severe oral burning, vomiting, and hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. MANDATORY 2-HOUR BOILING PAOZHI. ABSOLUTELY CONTRAINDICATED IN PREGNANCY.

    Clinical Applications

    • Acute suppurative tonsillitis and severe pharyngitis (bactericidal lysis against Streptococcus pyogenes via Daphnoretin), cervical tubercular lymphadenitis, malignant ascites, and tumors.

    Quality Markers

    Daphnoretin (荛花素 / 瑞香素) >= 0.15%, Wikstroemol, Wikstroelides A-E & Dicoumarins (HPLC ChP standard)

    Mechanism & Phytochemistry

    1. Daphnoretin disrupts bacterial peptidoglycan cross-linking in Streptococcus pyogenes, clearing tonsillar pus in 48h. 2. Wikstroelides bind PKC to arrest cancer cells. 3. Prolonged boiling (>2h) hydrolyzes toxic daphnane orthoesters into safe polyols.

    Preparation & Dosage

    CRITICAL PAOZHI MANDATE: MANDATORY PROLONGED BOILING (Jiu Jian >= 2 Hours): 3 to 6 g dried root slices MUST BE BOILED FOR A FULL 2 HOURS in 800 mL water before adding other herbs (destroys irritants). Topical lymph plaster: 15 g steamed root bark. RAW FORBIDDEN.

    Appended Prescriptions

    • 1. The Sovereign Lingnan Acute Tonsillitis Decoction (Liao Ge Wang, boiled 2h) with Lonicera japonica and Platycodon. 2. Scrofula Lymph Node Plaster with steamed root bark.
