    Cautions & Contraindications

    • EXTREME LETHAL CARDIAC POISON: Ingestion of 1-2 raw seeds can kill a child; 3-5 can kill an adult by triggering heart block and ventricular arrest. Antidote: DigiFab, Atropine, Gastric Lavage (NEVER use calcium). CONTRAINDICATED IN PREGNANCY.

    Clinical Applications

    • Acute congestive heart failure and cardiac edema (pharmaceutical extraction of Peruvoside for rapid inotropy), and external parasitic wash for scabies/lice. Crude plant forbidden internally.

    Quality Markers

    Thevetin A & B (黄花夹竹桃苷) >= 1.50%-3.00%, Peruvoside >= 0.50% & Thevetoxin (HPLC standard)

    Mechanism & Phytochemistry

    1. Peruvoside and thevetin selectively inhibit myocardial Na+/K+-ATPase, elevating intracellular calcium to produce powerful positive inotropic contractions. 2. Overdose triggers ventricular fibrillation and arrest.

    Preparation & Dosage

    CRITICAL PHARMACEUTICAL & EXTERNAL MANDATE: CRUDE SEEDS ABSOLUTELY FORBIDDEN FOR HOMEMADE INTERNAL INGESTION. Standardized pharmaceutical Peruvoside: strictly prescribed (0.15-0.3 mg IV/oral). External scabies wash: 10 g leaves boiled in 1 L water.
