    Traditional Edict

    Clove (Bunga Cengkih / Gong Ding Xiang). Nail-shaped unopened flower buds with intense warming aroma. Undisputed Emperor of Stomach-Warming and Anti-Emetic Medicine (Ding Xiang Shi Di Tang): halts intractable vomiting and hiccups, abolishes toothache.

    Cautions & Contraindications

    • EIGHTEEN INCOMPATIBILITIES (Shi Ba Fan): DO NOT COMBINE WITH CURCUMA (YU JIN) ('Ding Xiang Nan He Yu Jin Ku'). CONTRAINDICATED in Stomach fire with red tongue and thirst. Safe in culinary use.

    Clinical Applications

    • Intractable vomiting, nausea, and diaphragmatic spasm hiccups (E Ni from Spleen-Stomach cold), acute pulpitis toothache (instant topical anesthesia), and epigastric cold pain.

    Quality Markers

    Eugenol (丁香酚) >= 75.0%-88.0%, Eugenyl Acetate >= 10.0% & Volatile Oil >= 15.0% mL/g (HPLC/GC-MS Chinese Pharmacopoeia)

    Mechanism & Phytochemistry

    1. Eugenol blocks voltage-gated sodium channels (Nav1.7/1.8) and desensitizes TRPV1 receptors, providing instant dental anesthesia. 2. 5-HT3 and D2 receptor antagonism halts vomiting. 3. Broad-spectrum bactericidal lysis.

    Preparation & Dosage

    THE SOVEREIGN DING XIANG SHI DI ANTI-EMETIC DECOCTION: 3 to 5 g dried Clove buds boiled with Kaki Calyx (Shi Di, 10 g), Dang Shen, and Sheng Jiang in 400 mL water for 15 min; taken warm for hiccups/vomiting. Toothache: 1 drop pure clove oil placed in cavity.
