Traditional Edict
Clears summer-heat and harmonizes Stomach (清热解暑), drains dampness and stops diarrhea (利湿止泻), moistens Lungs and stops cough (润肺止咳). Core flower in Lingnan Five Flowers Tea (Wu Hua Cha) for summer fever, dysentery, and heat cough.
Cautions & Contraindications
- Raw milky sap from stems and bark is toxic and must never be ingested. Flower is contraindicated in Spleen-Stomach cold diarrhea without heat and in pregnancy.
Clinical Applications
- Summer-heat gastrointestinal syndromes, infectious gastroenteritis (Shigella, Salmonella), pediatric damp-heat indigestion, heat cough, and vascular inflammation.

Mechanism & Phytochemistry
1. Iridoids (plumericin, isoplumericin, fulvoplumierin) exert potent antimicrobial action against enteric bacilli and suppress inflammatory nitric oxide. 2. Lupeol and rubranonoside downregulate COX-2 and 5-LOX, reducing PGE2. 3. Quercetin and plumieride stimulate eNOS-mediated vasorelaxation.
Preparation & Dosage
Whole dried fallen flower corollas. Decoct gently 10-15 minutes. Dosage: 5-10 g daily in decoction. Concentrated extract: 1-2 g.
