Traditional Edict
Red Frangipani (Bunga Kemboja Merah / Ji Dan Hua). Showy crimson-pink flowers with acute leaves. Chief monarch flower in Lingnan Five-Flower Cooling Teas (Wu Hua Cha): clears summer-heatstroke, generates saliva, calms dry cough, halts dysentery.
Cautions & Contraindications
- Fresh milky tree latex (Getah Kemboja) from stems contains irritants (DO NOT INGEST RAW LATEX; keep away from eyes). Dried blossoms are non-toxic and safe. Contraindicated in cold watery diarrhea.
Clinical Applications
- Summer-heatstroke dehydration, acute tracheobronchitis with dry hacking cough, acute bacillary dysentery (Shigella enteritis), chronic pharyngitis, and essential hypertension.

Mechanism & Phytochemistry
1. Plumieride inhibits tracheal voltage-gated calcium channels, producing bronchodilation and cough relief. 2. Fulvoplumierin causes bactericidal lysis against Shigella and Vibrio. 3. Flavonoid eNOS vasodilation lowers blood pressure.
Preparation & Dosage
THE SOVEREIGN LINGNAN FIVE-FLOWER SUMMER COOLING TEA (Wu Hua Cha): 10 to 15 g dried flowers boiled with Chrysanthemum, Jin Yin Hua, Mu Mian Hua, and Ge Hua in 1.5 L water for 20 min. Bronchial cough decoction: 15 g with Luo Han Guo. Decoct: 5-15 g.
