    Traditional Edict

    Net-Veined Phyllanthus (Pokok Kayu Merah / Wang Mai Ye Xia Zhu). Reddish inner bark and black juicy berries. Sovereign astringent for binding acute watery diarrhea and bacillary dysentery, halts bleeding gums (gingivitis), and heals ulcers.

    Cautions & Contraindications

    • Do not administer high-dose astringent bark decoctions in early food poisoning before toxins evacuate. High safety profile. Contraindicated in spastic constipation with dry hard stools.

    Clinical Applications

    • Acute bacillary dysentery (Shigella), acute secretory diarrhea, chronic marginal gingivitis with bleeding, periodontal pocket inflammation, and superficial burn wounds.

    Quality Markers

    Friedelin >= 0.50%, Betulinic Acid, Corilagin & Ellagic Acid >= 1.50% (HPLC MHM standard)

    Mechanism & Phytochemistry

    1. Ellagic acid and corilagin ellagitannins cross-link mucosal proteins on inflamed intestinal enterocytes, blocking fluid hypersecretion and halting dysentery. 2. Friedelin and betulinic acid inhibit P. gingivalis and constrict gingival capillaries.

    Preparation & Dosage

    THE SOVEREIGN KAYU MERAH DYSENTERY & PERIODONTAL DECOCTION: 15 to 30 g dried bark and leaves boiled in 600 mL water for 20 min; taken orally for diarrhea, or used as warm mouthwash 3 times daily for bleeding gums. Topical poultice: 30-50 g fresh leaves.
