    Traditional Edict

    Beach Pandan (Mengkuang Laut / Lou Dou Shu / Ci Bo Luo). Spiny screwpine with prop stilt roots and massive orange syncarps. Aerial stilt roots and fruit pulp powerfully dissolve and flush urinary kidney stones (Ubat Batu Karang), clear hepatitis jaundice, quench diabetic thirst.

    Cautions & Contraindications

    • Carefully remove sharp marginal spines before handling foliage. Maintain high daily water intake (>2.5 L/day) when treating urinary stones. Contraindicated in complete mechanical urinary obstruction.

    Clinical Applications

    • Calcium oxalate nephrolithiasis/urolithiasis (stone dissolution and mechanical flushing), acute icteric viral hepatitis (transaminase reduction), Type 2 Diabetes mellitus, and acute cystitis strangury.

    Quality Markers

    Pinoresinol, Secoisolariciresinol (Lignans) >= 0.50%, b-Carotene >= 10.0 mg/100g & Potassium >= 2.50% (HPLC MHM standard)

    Mechanism & Phytochemistry

    1. Lignans and potassium salts elevate urinary pH and increase urinary citrate, preventing calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM) stone nucleation. 2. Carotenoids and lignans upregulate hepatic BSEP for jaundice drainage. 3. Diuretic flush.

    Preparation & Dosage

    THE SOVEREIGN MENGKUANG LAUT KIDNEY STONE-EXPELLING DECOCTION: 30 to 50 g dried sliced aerial stilt roots (Akar Udara) boiled with Desmodium styracifolium and Orthosiphon in 1.5 L water for 30 min. Fruit pulp tisane: 30 g for hepatitis jaundice.
