Traditional Edict

Water Thread Herb / Elbow Grass. Morphological twin to Bai Hua She She Cao (bearing 2-4 flowers per peduncle). Clears toxic heat, drains dampness, clears jaundice, draws intestinal abscesses, dissolves tumors.

Cautions & Contraindications

Differentiate from Hedyotis diffusa by its 2-4 flowered corymbose peduncles. Contraindicated in Spleen-Stomach deficiency cold diarrhea without heat signs. Caution in pregnancy.

Clinical Applications

Colorectal adenocarcinoma (HCT-116), hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2), acute appendicitis, bacillary dysentery, acute hepatitis jaundice, and acute urinary tract infections.

Oleanolic Acid >= 0.30%, Ursolic Acid, Asperuloside & Geniposidic Acid (HPLC MHM standard)

Mechanism & Phytochemistry

1. Oleanolic and ursolic acids downregulate Bcl-2, upregulate Bax, and inhibit MMP-2/9 invasion in colon and liver carcinoma lines. 2. Geniposidic acid blocks NF-kB in appendicitis. 3. Diuretic bacterial clearance.

Preparation & Dosage

Whole dried herb in decoction: 15-30 g daily (up to 60 g in acute appendicitis/oncology). The Sovereign Lingnan Oncological Duo: 30 g paired with 30 g Hedyotis diffusa and 15 g Scutellaria barbata.
