Traditional Edict
White Mulberry (Pokok Mulberi / Sang). Entire Tree is Medicine. Autumn frost leaves (Shuang Sang Ye) command world's premier a-glucosidase inhibitor (DNJ) for diabetes; root bark (Sang Bai Pi) drains lung-edema and lowers blood pressure; fruit enriches Blood-Yin.
Cautions & Contraindications
- Harvest leaves in late autumn after frost (Shuang Sang Ye) for peak active DNJ content. High clinical and culinary safety. Contraindicated in cold watery diarrhea without heat signs.
Clinical Applications
- Type 2 Diabetes mellitus (postprandial glucose blunting via competitive intestinal a-glucosidase inhibition), acute bronchitis with dry cough, essential hypertension, and diabetic retinopathy.
Quality Markers
Mechanism & Phytochemistry
1. 1-Deoxynojirimycin (DNJ) competitively inhibits intestinal a-glucosidases (maltase, sucrase), preventing disaccharide breakdown into glucose. 2. Mulberroside A downregulates renal RAAS and vascular eNOS. 3. Anthocyanins retinal protection.
Preparation & Dosage
THE SOVEREIGN SHUANG SANG YE GLYCEMIC CLEARING TEA: 10 to 15 g frost-harvested Mulberry leaves steeped in hot water, consumed with meals for diabetes. Sang Bai Pi decoction: 10-15 g daily for hypertension/edema. Fresh berries: 50-100 g.
Appended Prescriptions
- 1. Classical Mulberry & Chrysanthemum Cough Decoction (Sang Ju Yin / 桑菊饮) with Platycodon. 2. Glycemic-Lowering Synergy with Momordica charantia (Peria Katak) and Cornsilk.
