Traditional Edict

Clears damp-heat, unblocks strangury, and discharges stones (清热利湿，通淋排石). First-line Lingnan botanical for urinary stone strangury (石淋), nephrolithiasis, ureterolithiasis, cholelithiasis, and damp-heat jaundice.

Cautions & Contraindications

Use with caution in Spleen-Kidney deficiency cold with profuse clear nocturnal urination. Large stones (> 10 mm) with hydronephrosis require surgical intervention.

Clinical Applications

Calcium oxalate and uric acid urolithiasis, post-lithotripsy gravel expulsion, chronic cystitis, recurrent UTIs, and hepatobiliary sludge.

Schaftoside (夏佛塔苷) >= 0.18% (Chinese Pharmacopoeia)

Mechanism & Phytochemistry

1. Schaftoside and Vicenin-2 inhibit calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM) crystal nucleation/aggregation and downregulate Osteopontin (OPN) and CD44. 2. Reduces renal MDA and elevates SOD, shielding renal tubular epithelium. 3. Potassium salts induce osmotic diuresis and ureteral smooth muscle relaxation.

Preparation & Dosage

Sliced dried herb decocted 30-45 minutes. Standard dosage: 15-30 g daily. Acute stone expulsion: 30-60 g daily with abundant water.

Appended Prescriptions

1. Guang Jin Qian Cao Pai Shi Tang with Lygodium spores (Hai Jin Sha), Pyrrosia (Shi Wei), Achyranthes, and Dianthus. 2. Hepatobiliary Choleretic Formulation with Artemisia capillaris and Curcuma wenyujin.
