    Traditional Edict

    Duku Laut (Guang Jin Qian Cao / Tong Qian Cao). Prostrate subshrub with round coin-like leaves covered in golden-velvety undersides. Sovereign Lithotriptic of Chinese Medicine (Pai Shi Yao Huang / Raja Hancur Batu Karang, Cuci Pundi Kencing & Lawas Kencing Duku Laut): boiling the coin-leaved herb dissolves painful kidney and bladder calculi, flushes gallstones, eliminates agonizing burning strangury (Shi Lin), and drains yellow jaundice.

    Cautions & Contraindications

    • Exceptional clinical, renal, and gastrointestinal safety profile. In large obstructing staghorn calculi (>10 mm), combine with surgical lithotripsy oversight. Safe during lactation; use standard moderate doses during pregnancy.

    Clinical Applications

    • Nephrolithiasis, ureterolithiasis and urinary bladder calculi (Shi Lin / Kidney Stones); cholelithiasis, biliary colic and chronic cholecystitis (Dan Shi); acute urinary tract infection, cystitis and hematuria (Re Lin / Xue Lin); acute icteric viral hepatitis and obstructive jaundice.

    Mechanism & Phytochemistry

    Schaftoside (>= 0.15%) and acidic polysaccharides inhibit calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM) crystal nucleation and aggregate transformation while upregulating renal Tamm-Horsfall Protein (THP) to prevent stone adhesion to tubular epithelium; vicenin-2 blocks L-type voltage-gated Ca2+ channels in ureteral smooth muscle, producing cyclical peristaltic relaxation to propel stones into the bladder; promotes bile flow and lowers biliary cholesterol saturation.

    Preparation & Dosage

    Decoction: 15 to 30 g daily for maintenance; 30 to 60 g daily during active stone-expelling protocols (Pai Shi Tang). Standardized extract: 300 to 600 mg twice daily. Fresh plant: 60 to 120 g boiled.

    • 1. The Classical Nephrolithiasis Stone-Expelling Formula (Pai Shi Tang / 伤科排石汤): Guang Jin Qian Cao 45 g, Shi Wei 15 g, Hai Jin Sha 15 g (wrapped), Hu Zhang 12 g, Niu Xi 12 g decocted in 900 mL water for 30 min; drink warm twice daily. 2. The Sovereign Gallstone & Jaundice Clearance Draught (Dan Shi Pai Du Tang / 胆石清热排石饮): Guang Jin Qian Cao 30 g, Yin Chen 18 g, Yu Jin 12 g, Zhi Zi 9 g decocted in 700 mL water for 25 min.
