    Akar Berangan (Man Huang Tan / Bo Gu Teng). Climbing rainforest liana with tamarind-like feathery leaves and concentric red resin rings. Master Bone-Knitting Fracture Healer and Joint Restorer (Raja Sambung Patah Tulang, Terseliuh Sendi & Surut Lebam): boiling the woody vine discs into a warming decoction stimulates bone union in closed fractures, unblocks stiff cold joints, and fresh pounded bark poultices dissolve deep traumatic hematomas within 24 hours.

    Cautions & Contraindications

    • High clinical, traumatological, and musculoskeletal safety profile. Safe during lactation; use moderate doses during active pregnancy (avoid high-dose wine tinctures).

    Clinical Applications

    • Closed bone fractures, delayed callus union and traumatic joint sprains (Bo Gu); rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and sciatica; traumatic bruises, hematomas and soft-tissue contusions; postpartum blood stasis and pelvic pain.

    Mechanism & Phytochemistry

    Dalbergin (>= 0.50%) and formononetin (>= 0.40%) upregulate osteoblast Runx2, collagen type I (COL1A1) and BMP-2 (p < 0.001), accelerating fibrocartilaginous callus mineralization into hard trabecular bone; isoflavones downregulate synovial NF-kB and COX-2, easing inflammatory joint pain; tannins stimulate microvascular t-PA release to speed hematoma resorption.

    Preparation & Dosage

    Decoction: 10 to 20 g dried sliced stems (maximum 30 g). Medicinal wine tincture (1:5): 15 to 30 mL twice daily. Standardized extract: 250 to 500 mg twice daily. Wine stir-frying (Jiu Zhi Bo Gu Teng) directs action deeply into the skeletal frame.
