    Traditional Edict

    Curcuma Zedoary / Peng E Zhu (Temu Hitam Jawa / Peng E Zhu / Lu Si Yu Jin / Rhizoma Curcumae). Massive hard waxy rhizome with purplish cambial rings and red-ribbed leaves. Pharmacopoeial Monarch for Breaking Blood Masses: boiled vinegar rhizome induces PARP cleavage and caspase-3/9 apoptosis in gastric and cervical cancer.

    Cautions & Contraindications

    • BLACK BOX PREGNANCY CONTRAINDICATION: Strong blood-breaking, uterotonic, and embryotoxic properties; ABSOLUTELY CONTRAINDICATED IN PREGNANCY. Contraindicated in active gastrointestinal bleeding.

    Clinical Applications

    • Gastric adenocarcinoma, esophageal carcinoma, and hepatocellular carcinoma (PARP cleavage and G2/M arrest via Curdione >= 0.35% and Curcumol), cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN / HPV dysplasia), and uterine fibroids.

    Quality Markers

    Curdione (莪术二酮) >= 0.35%, Germacrone >= 0.20%, Curcumol >= 0.25% & Essential Oil >= 1.50% v/w (Chinese Pharmacopoeia standard)

    Mechanism & Phytochemistry

    1. Curdione and curcumol inhibit PI3K/Akt/mTOR (IC50=2.4 uM), inducing mitochondrial apoptosis in carcinoma cells. 2. Germacrone suppresses VEGFR2 phosphorylation, cutting off tumor neovascularization.

    Preparation & Dosage

    CU ZHI PENG E ZHU (Vinegar-Processed Curcuma Zedoary): Sliced steamed rhizomes moistened with rice vinegar (15 kg/100 kg) and stir-fried to golden; directs mass-dissolving action to Liver/Uterus. Decoction: 6 to 12 g daily. (RAW SEEDS/UNSTEAMED PROHIBITED; PREGNANCY FORBIDDEN).
