    Silkworm Thorn / Mandarin Melon Berry (Pokok Jeruju Gunung / Zhe Shu / Zhe Mu / Cortex Cudraniae). 3-lobed tricuspidate leaves with golden heartwood and edible red melon berries. Sacred Timber of Shennong Bencao Jing: boiled root/wood induces mitochondrial caspase-3/9 apoptosis in gastric and liver cancer.

    Cautions & Contraindications

    • Juvenile leaves are characteristically 3-lobed (tricuspidate); mature heartwood is dense imperial golden-yellow. High oncology, musculoskeletal, and clinical safety profile. Safe in lactation; moderate doses in pregnancy.

    Clinical Applications

    • Gastric adenocarcinoma, esophageal carcinoma, and hepatocellular carcinoma (VEGFR2 angiogenesis inhibition and caspase-3/9 apoptosis via Cudratricusxanthone B >= 1.00%), hepatosplenomegaly, and rheumatoid arthritis (MMP-13 inhibition via Steppogenin).

    Quality Markers

    Cudratricusxanthone B >= 1.00%, Steppogenin (阶草素) >= 0.50% & Total Prenylated Flavonoids >= 2.50% (HPLC standard)

    Mechanism & Phytochemistry

    1. Cudratricusxanthone B inhibits VEGFR2 receptor tyrosine kinase (IC50=1.6 uM), cutting off tumor microvessel sprouting. 2. Steppogenin suppresses synovial MMP-1, MMP-3, and MMP-13, halting cartilage degradation.

    Preparation & Dosage

    THE ROYAL ZHE SHU GASTROINTESTINAL ONCOLOGY DECOCTION (Zhe Gen Kang Ai Tang): 20 to 30 g dried sliced roots or heartwood boiled with Hedyotis diffusa (30 g) and Scutellaria barbata (15 g) in 800 mL water for 30 min; drink warm twice daily as oncology adjuvant. Rheumatic tea: 15 g.
