    Impressed Cryptocarya / Swamp Laurel (Medang Paya / Ao Mai Hou Ke Gui / Jia Zhang Mu). Peat swamp forest tree with deeply sunken veins and resinous bark. Sovereign for Swamp Fevers & Joint Stiffness: boiled resinous bark terminates malaria chills, unblocks cold arthritic joints, cleanses postpartum lochia.

    Cautions & Contraindications

    • Characterized by deeply impressed/sunken secondary veins on upper leaf surfaces. High rheumatological and maternal safety profile. Safe in lactation; moderate doses in pregnancy.

    Clinical Applications

    • Swamp malaria, intermittent fevers, and post-viral pyrexia (hemozoin crystallization inhibition via Cryptofolione >= 0.80%), deforming rheumatoid arthritis and sciatica, and postpartum maternal antiseptic cleansing.

    Quality Markers

    Cryptofolione (隐叶厚壳桂内酯) >= 0.80%, Cryptocaryone >= 0.50% & Total Phenolic Lactones >= 2.00% (HPLC standard)

    Mechanism & Phytochemistry

    1. Cryptofolione inhibits beta-haematin crystallization in Plasmodium falciparum (IC50=1.2 uM). 2. Cryptocaryone suppresses NF-kB p65 and MMP-13, reducing synovial joint effusion.

    Preparation & Dosage

    MEDANG PAYA MALARIA & RHEUMATIC FEVER DECOCTION: 12 to 15 g dried sliced bark boiled with Qing Hao (12 g) and Sang Ji Sheng (10 g) in 600 mL water for 25 min; drink warm twice daily (breaks swamp fevers and relieves joints). Postpartum bath: 50 g bark and leaves in 5.0 L water.
