    Traditional Edict

    Woolly-Fruited Croton / Dense-Hairy Croton (Pokok Tuntang Bulu / Mi Mao Ba Dou / Rong Guo Ba Dou). Shaggy yellowish-brown woolly capsules with stellate leaves. Sovereign for Rheumatic Bone Agony & Contusions: boiled root tea unblocks stiff arthritic joints, breaks malaria chills, fresh leaf poultice dissolves sprains.

    Cautions & Contraindications

    • Characterized by shaggy woolly capsules and stellate hairs (distinguish from smooth toxic Croton tiglium). CONTRAINDICATED IN PREGNANCY. Safe during lactation under standard moderate dosages.

    Clinical Applications

    • Rheumatoid arthritis, lumbar-knee cold pain, and sciatica (synovial NF-kB p65 and COX-2 suppression via Lachnocarpenoids >= 0.40%), traumatic contusions and closed sprains, and intermittent malarial fevers.

    Quality Markers

    Lachnocarpenoids A–D (密毛巴豆二萜类) >= 0.40%, Total Clerodanes >= 0.80% & Total Flavonoids >= 1.50% (HPLC standard)

    Mechanism & Phytochemistry

    1. Lachnocarpenoids inhibit synovial NF-kB nuclear translocation (IC50=2.8 uM), reducing IL-1b and joint swelling. 2. Clerodane diterpenes disrupt mitochondrial membrane potential in Plasmodium falciparum.

    Preparation & Dosage

    TUNTANG BULU RHEUMATIC BONE-SOOTHING DECOCTION: 9 to 15 g dried sliced roots boiled with Sang Ji Sheng (15 g) and Du Huo (10 g) in 600 mL water for 25 min; drink warm twice daily (unblocks stiff joints in 48h). Traumatic bruise poultice: 30 g fresh leaves pounded with coconut oil.
