    Traditional Edict

    Silver Croton / Cascarilla Croton (Pokok Tuntang Hutan / Yin Ye Ba Dou / Yin Chai). Metallic silvery-lepidote leaf undersides. Sovereign for Chronic Sinusitis & Malarial Fevers: inhaling aromatic steam of boiled leaves unblocks obstinate sinus congestion (Resdung), while root decoction resolves rheumatic joint cold.

    Cautions & Contraindications

    • Characterized by metallic silvery peltate scales covering leaf undersides and capsules. High clinical, otolaryngological, and joint safety profile. Safe in lactation; moderate doses in pregnancy.

    Clinical Applications

    • Chronic maxillary sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, and nasal congestion (TRPM8 stimulation and turbinate decongestion via Volatiles >= 0.40% and Crocascarins), rheumatoid arthritis, and malarial chills.

    Quality Markers

    Crocascarins A–F (银叶巴豆二萜苷) >= 0.60%, Total Diterpenoids >= 1.50% & Essential Oil >= 0.40% v/w (HPLC standard)

    Mechanism & Phytochemistry

    1. Crocascarins and cascarillone dual-inhibit 5-LOX and NF-kB (IC50=2.1 uM), shrinking hypertrophied nasal turbinates and easing joint effusion. 2. Disrupts mitochondrial potential in Plasmodium falciparum.

    Preparation & Dosage

    THE TUNTANG HUTAN SINUS DECONGESTION STEAM & TISANE: 15 to 20 g dried roots and leafy twigs boiled with Xin Yi Hua (6 g) and Bo He (6 g) in 600 mL water for 15 min; inhale steam through nose for 5 min, drink warm tea twice daily (clears sinuses in 15 min). Rheumatic decoction: 15 g.
