    Traditional Edict

    Three-Leaved Caper / Varuna (Pokok Cadamba / San Ye Yu Mu / Hu Tou Jiao / Varuna). 3-foliolate leaves with spider-like cream-yellow flowers. Supreme Sovereign of Ayurveda (Varunadi Kwath): boiled bark tea dissolves calcium oxalate kidney stones, shrinks enlarged BPH prostate glands, restores bladder tone.

    Cautions & Contraindications

    • Large impacted renal calculi (>10 mm) require surgical urological consultation before lithotriptic flushing. High nephrological, urological, and clinical safety profile. Safe in lactation; moderate doses in pregnancy.

    Clinical Applications

    • Urolithiasis and nephrolithiasis stone dissolution (glycolate oxidase inhibition and calcium oxalate crystal demineralization via Lupeol >= 1.50%), benign prostatic hyperplasia BPH (5alpha-reductase downregulation), and chronic urinary retention.

    Quality Markers

    Lupeol (羽扇豆醇) >= 1.50%, Varunol >= 0.40%, Betulinic Acid >= 0.60% & Total Triterpenes >= 3.50% (HPLC standard)

    Mechanism & Phytochemistry

    1. Lupeol inhibits liver glycolate oxidase, reducing urinary oxalate excretion, while dissolving calcium oxalate matrices. 2. Varunol and betulinic acid inhibit 5alpha-reductase and prostate stromal proliferation.

    Preparation & Dosage

    CLASSICAL AYURVEDIC VARUNA LITHOTRIPTIC DECOCTION (Varunadi Kwath): 15 to 30 g dried sliced bark boiled with Tribulus (Gokshura, 15 g) and Desmodium (Jin Qian Cao, 20 g) in 800 mL water for 25 min; drink warm twice daily for 30 to 60 days (dissolves and expels kidney stones). BPH therapy: 15 g.
