    Cautions & Contraindications

    • High astringency; discontinue use once dysentery is controlled to avoid spastic constipation. Contraindicated in mechanical bowel obstruction. Safe during lactation; moderate doses in pregnancy.

    Clinical Applications

    • Refractory mucopurulent bacillary dysentery and bloody diarrhea (CFTR chloride channel blockade and anti-Shigella membrane lysis via Rapanone >= 0.50% and Proanthocyanidins >= 12.0%), intermittent malarial fevers, and snake envenomation.

    Rapanone (拉帕醌) >= 0.50%, Connarosides & Connarin >= 0.60% & Proanthocyanidins >= 12.0% (HPLC standard)

    Mechanism & Phytochemistry

    1. Rapanone alkylbenzoquinone arrests mitochondrial electron transport in Shigella and Plasmodium (MIC=3.1 ug/mL). 2. Proanthocyanidins precipitate surface mucosal proteins, halting secretory diarrhea.

    Preparation & Dosage

    THE SOVEREIGN AKAR LEMPAUNG ANTI-DYSENTERIC DECOCTION: 12 to 20 g dried sliced stems/roots boiled with Guava leaves (10 g) in 500 mL water for 20 min; taken warm twice daily after meals (halts bloody diarrhea). Snakebite poultice: 30 g fresh roots pounded with salt applied topically.
