    Traditional Edict

    Benghal Dayflower / Tropical Spiderwort (Rumput Aur-aur / Fan Bao Cao / Yuan Ye Ya Zhi Cao). Ovate leaves with funnel-like fused spathes and subterranean cleistogamous flowers. Sovereign for Damp-Heat Dysentery & Blind Furuncles: boiled herb tea clears bacillary dysentery and strangury, fresh poultice draws pus.

    Cautions & Contraindications

    • Forms underground closed flowers (cleistogamy). High clinical and gastrointestinal safety profile. Safe in lactation; use moderate doses in pregnancy.

    Clinical Applications

    • Acute and chronic bacillary dysentery (enterocyte mucosal sealing and anti-Shigella action via Commelinin >= 1.00% and Orientin), acute urinary tract infections with dysuria, and suppurative cutaneous boils.

    Quality Markers

    Commelinin (鸭跖蓝苷) >= 1.00%, Orientin >= 0.40%, Isovitexin & Total Flavonoids >= 2.20% (HPLC standard)

    Mechanism & Phytochemistry

    1. Orientin and isovitexin inhibit Shigella flexneri and E. coli adherence. 2. Flavonoid complexes stimulate renal tubular diuresis and downregulate colonic COX-2 (IC50=2.4 uM).

    Preparation & Dosage

    THE SOVEREIGN DAMP-HEAT DYSENTERY & STRANGURY DECOCTION: 20 to 30 g dried whole plant boiled with Che Qian Cao (15 g) in 600 mL water for 20 min; taken warm twice daily (clears infectious diarrhea and burning urination). Furuncle poultice: 30 g fresh leaves pounded with salt.
