Traditional Edict

Clears toxic heat from blood (清热解毒), disperses swelling and blood stasis (散瘀消肿), drains damp-heat, and unblocks strangury. Prescribed for venomous snake/insect bites, herpes zoster (缠腰蛇), varicella, jaundice, scalds, and contusions.

Cautions & Contraindications

Contraindicated in Spleen-Stomach Deficiency Cold and pregnancy. Avoid unmonitored concurrent intake with chemotherapeutics due to potential antagonism.

Clinical Applications

Cutaneous Herpes Simplex (HSV-1, HSV-2), Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV / shingles), eczema, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and diabetic metabolic inflammation.

Mechanism & Phytochemistry

1. Chlorophyll derivatives (13^2-hydroxy-phaeophytin a & b) directly inactivate HSV and VZV viral envelopes before cell entry. 2. C-glycosyl flavones (schaftoside, isoorientin, orientin, vitexin) downregulate TLR4/NF-kB, inhibiting COX-2, iNOS, TNF-a, and IL-6. 3. Clinacosides and lupeol activate Nrf2/HO-1 cellular antioxidant axis.

Preparation & Dosage

Topical zero-water balm (15% beeswax with infused leaves) or 100-day ethanolic spray for touchless wound application. Dried herb in decoction: 15-30 g daily. Fresh herb: 30-60 g.
