    Traditional Edict

    Pomelo / Huajuhong (Limau Bali / Limau Tambun / You / Hua Ju Hong). Giant citrus with heart-shaped winged leaves and thick velvety peel. Foremost Monarch for Dissolving Phlegm: dried peel (Huajuhong) cuts through sticky tracheal mucus plugs, relieves asthmatic cough, clears food coma and alcohol hangover.

    Cautions & Contraindications

    • BLACK BOX CYP3A4 DRUG INTERACTION WARNING: Pomelo contains bergamottin which irreversibly inhibits intestinal CYP3A4; DO NOT consume concurrently with Statins, Amlodipine, or Cyclosporine. Safe in pregnancy.

    Clinical Applications

    • Chronic bronchitis, spastic phlegm cough, and COPD (MUC5AC mucin gene transcription suppression via Naringin >= 1.50%), functional dyspeptic food stagnation, and alcohol intoxication.

    Quality Markers

    Naringin (柚皮苷) >= 1.50%-3.50% in dried peel (HPLC Chinese Pharmacopoeia standard for Huajuhong) & Limonin >= 0.30%

    Mechanism & Phytochemistry

    1. Naringin suppresses neutrophil elastase-induced airway MUC5AC mucin overexpression (IC50=2.4 uM). 2. Naringenin upregulates hepatic alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and ALDH2.

    Preparation & Dosage

    THE IMPERIAL HUAJUHONG PHLEGM-DISSOLVING TISANE: 3 to 6 g aged dried peel slices steeped in 300 mL boiling water with 1 tsp raw honey for 10 min; sip warm 3 times daily (liquefies phlegm in minutes). Fresh fruit pulp: 100 to 250 g daily. Standardized extract: 200 to 400 mg twice daily.
