    Traditional Edict

    Golden Woolly Fern / Dog's Spine (Paku Emas / Gou Ji / Jin Mao Gou Ji / Rhizoma Cibotii). Creeping rhizome densely furred in shining golden silk. Middle Grade of Shennong Bencao Jing: Wine-steamed rhizome tonifies Kidneys to heal lumbar disc herniation, sciatica & knee flaccidity; golden hairs halt arterial bleeding in 15s.

    Cautions & Contraindications

    • Never decoct uncleaned rhizomes bearing golden hairs internally (causes persistent coughing). Contraindicated in Kidney-Yin deficiency with blazing heat. Safe and highly indicated in postpartum weakness and lactation.

    Clinical Applications

    • Lumbar intervertebral disc herniation and sciatica (chondrocyte Col-II upregulation and MMP-13 suppression via Protocatechuic acid >= 0.050%), osteoporosis, and immediate surgical/traumatic hemostasis (golden trichome wool).

    Quality Markers

    Protocatechuic Acid (原儿茶酸) >= 0.050%-0.150% (HPLC Chinese Pharmacopoeia standard) & Total Cibotanosides >= 1.20%

    Mechanism & Phytochemistry

    1. Protocatechuic acid upregulates BMP-2, Runx2, and ALP in osteoblasts, surging bone mineral density and preventing disc collapse. 2. Golden trichome micro-fibers absorb plasma water and concentrate Factor XII to form instant clots.

    Preparation & Dosage

    MANDATORY SAND-SCALDING HAIR REMOVAL (Tang Gou Ji): Raw golden hairs must be completely singed off before internal decoction to prevent severe throat irritation. WINE-STEAMED GOU JI (Jiu Zhi Gou Ji): Steamed with rice wine for 3 hours. Decoction: 9 to 15 g (up to 20 g). Topical golden wool applied directly onto wounds.
