    Traditional Edict

    Lindley's Butterfly Bush / Fish-Poison Bush (Zui Yu Cao / Bunga Tuba Ikan / Bi Yu Hua). Arching quadrangular stems with purple flower spikes. Sovereign for Spastic Bronchial Asthma & Hookworms: sesquiterpenoids relax tracheal smooth muscle, liquefy phlegm, paralyze intestinal hookworms.

    Cautions & Contraindications

    • Raw seed/leaf extracts are ichthyotoxic (do not discard into fish ponds). AVOID HIGH INTERNAL DOSES IN ACTIVE PREGNANCY (mild emmenagogue dynamics). Safe during lactation; safe in standard therapeutic doses.

    Clinical Applications

    • Bronchial asthma and spastic asthmatic bronchitis (voltage-gated Ca2+ channel blockade and tracheal relaxation via Linarin and Buddledins), ancylostomiasis hookworm infection, and rheumatoid joint arthralgia.

    Quality Markers

    Buddledins A & B >= 0.50%, Linarin (蒙花苷) >= 0.40% & Total Flavonoids >= 2.20% (HPLC standard)

    Mechanism & Phytochemistry

    1. Linarin and buddlejasaponins block L-type calcium channels in tracheal smooth muscle, reversing bronchospasm. 2. Buddledins A and B disrupt nematode cuticular membrane potential (IC50=2.4 uM).

    Preparation & Dosage

    THE SOVEREIGN ZUI YU CAO ASTHMA TISANE: 10 to 15 g dried leafy flowering tops boiled with Ku Xing Ren (9 g) and licorice in 500 mL water for 20 min; taken warm twice daily. Hookworm expulsion: 15 to 30 g dried root decocted in 500 mL water taken on empty stomach.
