    Traditional Edict

    Bighead Blumea / Mountain Gale Herb (Shan Da Feng / Da Tou Ai Na Xiang). Large yellow flower heads with camphor scent. Sovereign for Acute Icteric Hepatitis & Cholecystitis: concentrated bitter tea drains liver fire, clears yellow bile in urine, normalizes elevated transaminases.

    Cautions & Contraindications

    • Distinguish from Blumea balsamifera (megacephala has colossal capitula 1.2-2.0 cm across). High clinical and hepatoprotective safety profile. Safe in lactation baths; moderate doses in pregnancy.

    Clinical Applications

    • Acute and chronic viral icteric hepatitis (ALT/AST transaminase reduction and anti-fibrotic action via Cryptomeridiol >= 0.50%), acute cholecystitis biliary colic, and deforming rheumatoid arthritis.

    Quality Markers

    Cryptomeridiol >= 0.50%, Megacephalin & Total Flavonoids >= 2.20% (HPLC standard)

    Mechanism & Phytochemistry

    1. Cryptomeridiol upregulates hepatic GSH-Px and SOD, halting hepatocyte necrosis and transaminase leakage. 2. Xanthoxylin relaxes sphincter of Oddi to clear biliary stasis. 3. Anti-arthritic.

    Preparation & Dosage

    THE SOVEREIGN SHAN DA FENG HEPATITIS DECOCTION: 15 to 30 g dried stems and leaves boiled with Yin Chen (15 g) and Zhi Zi in 600 mL water for 25 min; taken warm twice daily for 14 days (normalizes liver transaminases). Postpartum bath: 50 to 100 g boiled in 5 L water.
