Traditional Edict
Dispels wind-cold, unblocks strangury to expel stones, and activates blood. Essential in Nanyang maternal postpartum confinement baths (Mandi Daun Sembung) to expel deep puerperal wind-cold.
Cautions & Contraindications
- Do not boil in open vessels (l-borneol evaporates). Contraindicated in severe Yin deficiency dry heat.
Clinical Applications
- Urolithiasis (calcium oxalate nephrolithiasis and ureteral gravel - registered Sambong tablet), hyperuricemia, hypertension, and postpartum wind-cold retention.

Mechanism & Phytochemistry
1. Natural l-Borneol (Ai Pian) enhances tissue permeability, soothes smooth muscle spasms, and exerts rapid analgesia. 2. Blumeatin, quercetin, and luteolin inhibit calcium oxalate monohydrate nucleation and upregulate urinary citrate. 3. Sesquiterpenes induce osmotic diuresis.
Preparation & Dosage
Dried leaves in decoction (covered, 15-20 min): 10-20 g daily. Standardized Sambong tablets: 250-500 mg 3x daily. Maternal bath soak: 50-100 g boiled in 10 L water.
