    Scarlet Begonia / Angel Wing Begonia (Begonia Merah / Hong Hua Qiu Hai Tang / Asam Batu Merah). Jointed cane stems with angel-wing leaves and waxy scarlet flowers. Master Blood-Cooler & Throat-Clearing Healer: fresh sour juice gargle extinguishes tonsillitis, heals mouth ulcers, seals bleeding cuts.

    Cautions & Contraindications

    • Contains natural soluble oxalic acid (avoid excessive raw intake in patients with calcium oxalate kidney stones). CONTRAINDICATED in pure Spleen-Stomach deficiency cold diarrhea.

    Clinical Applications

    • Acute suppurative tonsillitis, pharyngitis, and aphthous stomatitis (rapid mucosal erythema reduction via Isoquercitrin and Anthocyanins), traumatic contusions and closed hematomas, and blood-heat epistaxis.

    Quality Markers

    Cyanidin-3-O-glucoside >= 1.50 mg/g, Isoquercitrin >= 0.40% & Cucurbitacins B and D (HPLC standard)

    Mechanism & Phytochemistry

    1. Isoquercitrin and anthocyanins downregulate TNF-a and COX-2 in pharyngeal tissues, relieving sore throat in 30 min. 2. Gallic acid activates clotting Factor XII to halt capillary bleeding.

    Preparation & Dosage

    THE SOVEREIGN BEGONIA SORE THROAT GARGLE: 15 to 30 g fresh leaves crushed in 200 mL warm water with a pinch of sea salt; gargled and swallowed slowly 3-4x daily for tonsillitis. Traumatic bruise poultice: 30 to 50 g fresh leaves pounded with virgin coconut oil.

    • 1. The Sovereign Acute Pharyngotonsillitis Gargle with Lonicera japonica (Jin Yin Hua) and mint. 2. Traumatic Contusion & Hematoma Poultice with Curcuma zedoaria (E Zhu) and rice wine.
