Traditional Edict

Five-pointed golden star fruit. Clears toxic heat, engenders fluids to eliminate vexation, soothes throat to open voice (Kai Yin), unblocks urination, dispels alcohol heat.

Cautions & Contraindications

CRITICAL LETHAL RENAL NEUROTOXICITY: Contains Caramboxin (NMDA/AMPA neurotoxin). In CKD, uremia, or dialysis patients, caramboxin cannot be excreted, causing intractable hiccups, seizures, coma, and death. ABSOLUTELY FORBIDDEN IN CKD AND DIALYSIS PATIENTS.

Clinical Applications

Acute viral laryngitis, vocal cord hoarseness/aphonia in singers, dry mouth (xerostomia), post-radiation pharyngitis, and Stage 1 hypertension.

Mechanism & Phytochemistry

1. Fructose, malic acid, and potassium salts stimulate submandibular salivary aquaporin flow, rehydrating vocal fold mucosa. 2. Epicatechin and proanthocyanidins stimulate eNOS vasodilation. 3. Flavonoids inhibit aldose reductase.

Preparation & Dosage

Fresh sweet starfruit sliced with salt: 50-100 g daily (1-2 fruits) FOR PATIENTS WITH NORMAL RENAL FUNCTION ONLY. Aged Salted Starfruit (Xian Yangtao - aged 1-3 years): 1/2 to 1 fruit steeped in boiling water for severe loss of voice.
