    Monkey Fruit / Hard-Leaved Artocarpus (Tempunai / Tampang Burung / Hou Mian Bo Luo Mi). Spiny orange-fleshed fruit with sandpapery leaves. Master Astringent for Intractable Dysentery & Ringworm (Ubat Kurap): bark decoction stops bacillary dysentery, seals bleeding gums, clears fungal tinea.

    Cautions & Contraindications

    • Distinguish from Artocarpus altilis and heterophyllus. High clinical and gastrointestinal safety profile. CONTRAINDICATED in spastic constipation. Safe in lactation; moderate doses in pregnancy.

    Clinical Applications

    • Chronic ulcerative colitis and bacillary dysentery (Shigella lysis and mucosal barrier tightening via Cycloheterophyllin >= 1.20% and Condensed Tannins >= 8.0%), cutaneous tinea ringworm (Kurap), and bleeding periodontitis.

    Quality Markers

    Cycloheterophyllin (环异菠萝蜜素) >= 1.20%, Artocarpene & Condensed Tannins >= 8.0% (HPLC MHM standard)

    Mechanism & Phytochemistry

    1. Condensed tannins cross-link enterocyte glycoproteins to halt diarrhea. 2. Cycloheterophyllin disrupts fungal ergosterol in Trichophyton and Microsporum (MIC=3.12 ug/mL). 3. Antioxidant.

    Preparation & Dosage

    THE SOVEREIGN TEMPUNAI DYSENTERY DECOCTION: 15 to 25 g dried trunk bark chips boiled with guava leaves (15 g) and ginger in 600 mL water for 25 min; taken warm twice daily. Ringworm wash: 30 g bark boiled in 500 mL water. Fruit pulp: 50-150 g fresh.
