    Hairy Ardisia / Red-Under-Snow (Mata Itik / Xue Xia Hong / Hu She Hong). Shaggy-hirsute stems with glowing ruby berries under leaves. Master for Pulmonary Hemoptysis & Intractable Cough: cools lung fire, liquefies phlegm, seals weeping capillaries in tuberculosis hemoptysis, heals tonsillitis.

    Cautions & Contraindications

    • Distinguish from Ardisia crenata (villosa has shaggy hairy stems and papillae-covered leaves). High clinical safety profile. CONTRAINDICATED in active pregnancy for high-dose decoctions.

    Clinical Applications

    • Bronchiectasis hemoptysis and chronic bronchitis (central cough inhibition and secretolysis via Bergenin >= 1.20%), pulmonary tuberculosis adjuvant recovery, acute tonsillitis, and traumatic bruises.

    Quality Markers

    Bergenin (岩白菜素) >= 1.20%, Villosin, Ardisicrenoside & Ardisianone (HPLC ChP/MHM standard)

    Mechanism & Phytochemistry

    1. Bergenin acts centrally on the medullary cough center to reduce cough by >70% while stimulating ciliary clearance. 2. Phenolics inhibit microvascular hyperpermeability to halt hemoptysis.

    Preparation & Dosage

    THE SOVEREIGN MATA ITIK HEMOPTYSIS & COUGH DECOCTION: 15 to 20 g dried whole herb boiled with Bletilla striata (Bai Ji, 10 g) and Bai He in 600 mL water for 25 min; taken warm twice daily (soothes tearing cough and clears bloody phlegm). Traumatic liniment: 30 g in 200 mL rice wine.

    • 1. The Sovereign Pulmonary Hemoptysis Quadriad with Bletilla striata (Bai Ji) and Ophiopogon. 2. Traumatic Contusion Draught with Tinospora sinensis (Kuan Jin Teng).
