Traditional Edict
Sacred Shiva tree (Bilva) in Ayurveda and Malay Jamu. Unripe fruit warms middle burner, stops chronic diarrhea and tenesmus; ripe fruit lubricates bowels and soothes gastritis.
Cautions & Contraindications
- Unripe fruit is strongly astringent; do not use in acute spastic constipation. Ripe fruit is mildly laxative.

- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D and IBS-C), chronic bacillary dysentery, ulcerative colitis, functional dyspepsia, and gastric mucosal protection.

Mechanism & Phytochemistry
1. Marmelosin (furocoumarin) and imperatorin regulate intestinal circular smooth muscle motility and suppress enterotoxigenic E. coli diarrhea. 2. Marmelide inhibits viral RNA synthesis. 3. Mucilage polysaccharides form a cytoprotective gel over gastric ulcers.
Preparation & Dosage
Dried sliced unripe fruit rounds (Bael Fruit Tea / Bael Cha) boiled 15-20 min: 10-20 g daily. Ripe fruit pulp as functional breakfast drink: 30-50 g.
