    Traditional Edict

    Sea Holly / Holly Mangrove (Jeruju / Jeruju Hitam / Lao Shu Le). Holly-like spiny leaves and blue-violet flowers. Supreme Mangrove Antidote: rapidly neutralizes venomous marine catfish (Ikan Sembilang), stingray and sea snake bites, dissolves scrofulous lymph nodes, clears cirrhosis.

    Cautions & Contraindications

    • Wear puncture-proof gloves when harvesting spiny leaves. In severe marine envenomations with systemic toxicity, administer alongside hospital emergency care. CONTRAINDICATED in pregnancy.

    Clinical Applications

    • Marine envenomations (inhibiting venom PLA2 and tissue necrosis via 2-Benzoxazolinone BOA), chronic viral hepatitis B/C and liver cirrhosis (suppressing hepatic stellate cell collagen), and scrofula.

    Quality Markers

    2-Benzoxazolinone (BOA) >= 0.50%, Acanthicifoline, Blepharin & Luteolin-7-O-glucoside (HPLC standard)

    Mechanism & Phytochemistry

    1. 2-Benzoxazolinone (BOA) and acanthicifoline competitively inhibit venom Phospholipase A2 and hyaluronidase, preventing tissue necrosis. 2. Luteolin-7-glucoside downregulates TGF-b1 in cirrhosis.

    Preparation & Dosage

    THE EMERGENCY MARINE FISH VENOM POULTICE: 40 to 60 g fresh spiny leaves pounded with warm rice wine and salt; applied directly over stingray or catfish puncture wounds after hot water soak. Internal hepatitis decoction: 15 to 30 g dried roots/stems in 600 mL water.
